"The future of pharmacy and the Philippine Health Care is in our hands. In becoming pharmacists, we dedicated our lives to national health and quality of life, tto make our country a healthier and beautiful place to live"...this is a declaration I am making to you as the future leaders of the pharmacy profession.
Questions maybe are in your minds of why you have to register as members of PPhA? What is the value of being a PPhA member?
Strategically, PPhA is the only national organization for pharmacists recognized and accredited by the Association of Professional Organizations which has placed Philippine Pharmacy Practice and Science supported by Education in the international healthcare map. Our collective energy and passion in what we do have set us to a great journey with confidence and determination. As the national hub for pharmacy practice, PPhA provides the collaborative platform for pharmacists nationwide to exchange ideas and learn from one another. We interweave our strengths to support better health outcomes. Through PPhA, we do together, with and for each other what we cannot do alone. Be assured that good governance is the key in the operation of PPhA. You should expect and be confident that decisions taken by your leaders are sound and honorable.
Two important FIP statements were ratified in Lisbon on September 2, 2010 and these are:
1. The Collaborative Practice
2. The Joint FIP/WHO Guidelines on Good Pharmacy Practice: Standards for Quality of Pharmacy Services
No. 1 statement emphasizes that a truly collaborative patient-centered health care focus, the pharmacist must be respected and must have equal status as full health care member based on competence established through contemporary and rigorous educational standards. It is fundamental for pharmacists to be well-educated and effectively trained to take on new roles.
No. 2 redefines the roles and functions of the pharmacist:
1. Prepare, obtain, secure, distribute, administer and dispose medical products
2. Provide effective medication therapy management
3. Maintain and improve professional performance
4. Contribute to improve effectiveness of the health care system and public health
Let us be prepared to do our roles in primary health care. Last June 16 and 17, Ms Leyesa and I were in a two-day forum in mapping policies for Universal Health Care in the country. This will place pharmacists in the forefront of primary health care.
Let me end by challenging everyone to embrace KAIZEN. KAI for "change" and ZEN for "good". KAIZEN urges everyone to "change for the better".
